Trans-Oral Brush Biopsies

Earlier this year, Sage Journals published an article on the effectiveness of Trans-Oral Brush Biopsies in detecting NPC, which is the method of detection in the NPScreen genetic test.

Dr. Patrick J. Gullane from the University Health Network in Toronto was one of the doctors who published this article. Dr. Gullane offered some advice for future head and neck surgeons on the benefits of early prevention. The following was pulled from a Q & A with Dr. Gullane.

Q: With the advent of ‘non-surgical’ treatments for advanced head and neck cancers, what advice would you give to future head and neck surgeons?

A: Overall, the most encouraging gains are coming from prevention and innovation. Worldwide, some 15-20% of cancers are caused by infections i.e. Human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), etc.

Dr. Gullane is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, University of Toronto. He is also a recipient of the Order of Canada.
