Signs and Symptoms

What are the Signs and Symptoms of NPC?

In the early stages, due to the obscure and deep anatomical location, patients with NPC may not show any overt signs or symptoms at all. Therefore, it is very difficult to identify early NPC and start treatment when it is in the most manageable stage. In fact, 70-80% of NPC patients already have late stage cancer when first diagnosed and nearly 60% of patients are diagnosed the first time with a neck lump, where cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.

Noticeable symptoms of NPC when diagnosed can include one or more of the followings:

  • A lump in the neck caused by a swollen cancerous lymph node
  • Bloody discharge from the nose or the back of the throat
  • Nasal congestion on one or both sides of nose
  • Hearing loss in one ear
  • Frequent ear infections with fluid in the middle ear
  • Headaches
  • Double vision
  • Face and neck pain
