Fequently Asked
Questions
Where Is NP ScreenŽ Testing Available
Currently the NP ScreenŽ assay has been released on a
limited basis. NP ScreenŽ assay may only be performed by a qualified clinician.
For availability of the test in your area click on Contact Us at the bottom
of this page.
How Is The Test Sample For The NP ScreenŽ Test
Collected And What Should I Expect
The collection procedure is similar to
the common throat swabbing, but in this case the swab is designed to constrain
collection of specimen to the post-nasal space where NPC first develops. The
procedure is simple, painless without the use or need for any anesthetic and is
quickly completed in a few seconds.
Can NP ScreenŽ Be Used To
Diagnose NPC
No. Only a confirmatory procedure such as biopsy evaluation by
a pathologist may be used to diagnose NPC. NP ScreenŽ is only a screen which is
used to assess a patient's need for a confirmatory procedure such as biopsy.
Can NP ScreenŽ Predict Future Occurrence Of NPC
No. NP ScreenŽ can
only assess a patient's current risk for NPC and can not predict future
abnormalities.
Is NP ScreenŽ A Cure For NPC
No. NPC may only
be cured by one of or a combination of radiation therapy, chemotherapy or
surgery.
How Rapidly Does NPC Develop
How rapidly NPC develops is
not completely understood. Doctors experienced with NPC believe it takes six to
twelve months for newly formed abnormalities to become clinically
overt.
What Does A Negative NP ScreenŽ Result Mean
Based on clinical
trials, a negative result indicates that with greater than 99%
probability the patient will not diagnose for NPC.
What Does
A Positive NP ScreenŽ Result Mean
Based on clinical trials, a positive
result is consistant with a diagnosis for NPC.
My NP ScreenŽ Result
Was Negative But My Test Result Showed Some abnormalities. Why?
Healthy,
cancer free patients may report no to very low, transient,
abnormality levels, this is normal.
How Often Should I Take
The NP ScreenŽ Test
Similar to tests for cervical cancer, breast cancer and
prostrate cancer, NP ScreenŽ should be taken regularly, at least annually. In
patients with a predisposition for NPC, semi-annual testing may be considered
because treatment outcome is dependant on early detection.
What Should I
expect After the Test
Within two to three weeks after the specimen
collection procedure the laboratory results will be reported to the physician
who performed the procedure. The physician's office will contact you and advise
the results and the appropriate follow up actions if any are
required.
Is NP ScreenŽ Approved By The Food And Drug
Administration (FDA)
NP ScreenŽ has been launched as a laboratory developed
test (LDT). The performance characteristics for NP ScreenŽ were established
through validation by Primex Clinical Laboratories, and no approval is required
by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Primex Clinical Laboratories is
regulated under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 ("CLIA")
as qualified to perform high complexity clinical testing.
This test is
patent protected and may only be performed as a service by Primex Clinical
Laboratories, Inc.
